Physics Center of Mass Spring - Mass System MCQ (Single Correct)

Two masses m 1 and m 2 are connected by a spring of spring constant k and are placed on a smooth horizontal surface. The correct answer is:
CHECK THE SOLUTION.

,

Sol.

Energy Conservation

⇒ Total change in length of spring = 2x { ∴ = }

Time is same

no external force ∴ centre of mass is at rest

hence m 1 x 1 = m 2 x 2 ⇒ = & x 1 + x 2 = 2d

or, m 1 x 1 = m 2 x 2 & x 1 + x 2 = 2d

x 1 = + x 2 = 2d

x 2 = 2d ⇒ x 2 = 2d

x 2 = & x 1 = Ans.
